The Massachusetts Caucus of Women Legislators’ Spring newsletter (PDF) has highlighted the Rappaport Center’s “Women in Politics: Challenges and Trends” panel held in April. The panel was moderated by Janet Wu, reporter for WCVB-TV, Channel 5, and included Representative Marty Walz (D–Boston), Professor Leanne Doherty of Simmons College, former Lt. Governor Kerry Healey, and Representative Shaunna O’Connell (R–Taunton). Over 160 people attended the successful , which was co-sponsored by the Boston Club, the Massachusetts Women’s Political Caucus, and the Women’s Bar Association.

Rappaport Chair Appointed to the Administrative Conference of the United States (Spring, 2011)
Alasdair Roberts, Rappaport Professor of Law and Public Policy, was appointed as one of the forty public members of the Administrative Conference of the United States, a federal agency revived by the Obama administration to provide advice on "making government work better."

"A New Path for Probation” joined several key players in the debate as to who should oversee the Probation Department and how to reform the agency in the aftermath of the Ware Report. The event was hosted by the Rappaport Center for Law and Public Service at Suffolk University Law School and co-sponsored by MassINC and the Massachusetts Bar Association. The event drew a packed crowd of over 175 people including several members of the executive, judicial, and legislative branches. The audience heard from a distinguished panel, moderated by CommonWealth Publisher Greg Torres, and including Robert A. Mulligan, Chief Justice for Administration and Management; Mary Beth Heffernan, Public Safety Secretary; Senator Cynthia Stone Creem, co-chair of the Joint Committee on the Judiciary and a member of the Probation Reform Working Group; and John Larivee, CEO of Community Resources for Justice.

The foreclosure prevention clinic sponsored by the Rappaport Center as part of the National Pro Bono Celebration, together with the efforts of students in the housing clinic, were noted in the Huffington Post.  This work is part of a collaboration with the No One Leave’s Project and the Chelsea Collaborative.  Suffolk Law students have been at the forefront of assisting homeowners who lack adequate financial means, resources, or knowledge, against banks and mortgage lenders seeking to foreclose on their properties.

The Supreme Judicial Court has appointed Susan Prosnitz, Executive Director of the Rappaport Center for Law and Public Service, to serve on the task force examining the hiring and promotional practices of Probation and other departments of the Massachusetts Judicial Branch. The task force is chaired by former Massachusetts Attorney General Scott Harshbarger.

Prosecutors and public defenders laid out their arguments in a forum Monday afternoon at the Rappaport Center for Law and Public Service at Suffolk University Law School. The two sides have engaged in a months-long debate over how the state pays to prosecute crimes and represent indigent defendants.

Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Program scholars and current 3Ls Christina Fischer and Julian Smith have been teaching Constitutional Law at the Another Course to College high school in Brighton. This past November, Mayor Thomas Menino and Boston Public Schools' Superintendent Carol Johnson sat in on a class and listened as the students discussed the possible arguments on backpack searches in schools.

The program teaches teens that they are the powerful agents of social change, and together, they can unite social barriers while transforming themselves through education and helping the community. Michelle Harper, the Rappaport Center’s Director of Public Interest and Pro Bono Programs, was quoted in the 9/1/09 issue of Wicked Local saying, “The Rappaport Center’s mission of promoting public service among the law school community is closely aligned with The City School’s mission of helping Boston-area youth give back to their communities and make meaningful change in our society.”

Carolyn Wilson received the Arthur R. Lambert Scholarship (8/2009)
Carolyn Wilson, a Suffolk University Law Student and a member of the Moot Court Honor Board, was recently awarded the Arthur R. Lambert Memorial Scholarship for her work as a 2009 Rappaport Fellow in Law and Public Policy with the Joint Committee on Education at the State House this summer. This scholarship is awarded to a select group of deserving students who exemplify a sense of strong moral values and are dedicated to working in public service. This summer, Carolyn interned at the Joint Committee on Education at the State House working with Representative Marty Waltz who is chair on the committee. She is interested in education policy. During her internship, Carolyn conducted research on charter school financing and potential alternatives to the current system.

The Rappaport Center for Law and Public Service has received a flurry of media attention for its revealing public opinion poll on ethics and state lobbying reform and timely March 25 roundtable event, winning coverage in The Boston Globe and half a dozen other Massachusetts newspapers. The Center’s poll and roundtable event came as Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo announced a new ethics legislation package which would expand the definition of “lobbyist” and increase penalties for lobbying rules violations.

Bussell is working for the Massachusetts Division of Banks, a regulatory agency, as part of the Rappaport Fellows Program at The Rappaport Center for Law and Public Service at Suffolk University Law School. "It's a great immersion in the field of administrative law," the 31-year-old Sanford resident said.

The fellows are working on critical education, mental health, health care, and environmental issues.

Suffolk University Law School will establish the Jerome Lyle Rappaport Center for Law and Public Service and create an endowed chair as the result of a $5 million donation from Jerry and Phyllis Rappaport and the Jerome Lyle Rappaport Charitable Foundation. "The Rappaport Foundation strives to identify the leaders of tomorrow and give them the tools and experience they need today to positively impact public policy in our region and beyond," said Phyllis Rappaport, the Foundation’s chairperson.
